After arriving at Sunset Bay Academy each student is placed in a student community called a “student family.” A “student family” is a group of students who are accountable to each other and themselves and are responsible for one another. The “school family” is their family away from home. This works out very well as teens tend to view their peer group as their new family while at home. And unfortunately, many times the negative peer culture seeps into the true home of the family. In their student family at SBA each member of there new peer group is given the chance to promote the wellbeing of one another. This approach is an opportunity to replicate similar challenges that teens experience at home, but put things in a more positive manner. This approach also gives each student a chance to practice new skills to overcome negative patterns that led to their disruption of their emotional growth, and the dysfunfuntion of most of their relationships, including family.
