Is your teenager having attitudes that are tearing your family apart? Have you thought of sending them to a camp, school or residency to improve the behavior they’re having at home? If so, there are some things to consider when looking for residential programs for troubled youth. This is an idea of what you should know before sending your teenager to some place that you don’t know.

Residential programs

When looking for a residential program, it’s important to analyze the situation. What’s happening with your teenager and what are the attitudes that are driving everybody mad at home? Is your teenager angry, depressed, defiant? Has your teenager gone through a bad period, lost someone close or is suffering from a difficult situation?

It’s important to know what’s going on with them, otherwise you won’t be able to help or to describe what their going through. Once you explain what’s happening, you’ll be able to know what they need and what you should look for. It’s hard, we know, but you need to be involved in the process, otherwise they won’t improve because they need your help.

Once you know what are your teenager’s needs, there are some features that we consider important to look for in a residential program.

Academic support

Since a residential program can cover a long period of time, relying on the academic support of the institution becomes essential. You want the academic program to be complete and to help your daughter or son to be competent and learn about the topics of their age.

Check what type of program they manage, who teaches the students, the educational approach and what results they can guarantee.

Therapeutic program

As a parent of a troubled teenager, therapy should be on top of your priorities. Without this aspect included in the residential program, there is no way the institution is compromised in helping your child. To understand what’s going on the student’s mind, their feelings and thoughts, every one of them needs to be listened and guided by a professional.

Make sure the boarding school you like has a therapeutic program; check it, ask as many questions as possible and see if what they offer fits your needs and those of your family.

These are some of the things that you should consider when looking for a boarding school for your teenager. At Sunset Bay Academy we are a treatment center for teenagers, and have the necessary experience to advise you and help you out when trying to save your family.
